For a small town with a plethora of modern bars and restaurants at its heart, you’d have expected a coffee spot that can serve a mean flat white to have sprung up before now. Welcome onto the Holmfirth food & drink scene, Bloc. Taking the onus from its surroundings (a previously atypical looking glass, well, block), Bloc stands out from the crowd. In a very good way.
The theme in interior design here is simply: colour, and they aren’t afraid to show it, in candy cane pinks, sunshine yellows and mint greens. Cheerful dining furniture sits beneath white pendants against striped thematic wallpaper, and a long bar along one glass wall acts as the perfect spot for gazing out at the charming streets of this little town. An outside seating area for warmer months will undoubtedly be the place to be seen this summer. The staff are young enough to make any customer feel old, but very charming and reassuringly competent.
The theme in food here is simply: toast, and it’s as easy as that. I’ve always found it frustrating when menus (especially in cafes) are over complicated, but Bloc are sticking to what they know and doing it right. The menu, from traditional beans through to avocado and cinnamon-banana, is served on a choice of different breads. Coffee is clearly of high quality – not too strong, and very drinkable, crafted with the same care that’s been put into creating this welcome addition to the neighbourhood.
